The Supreme Court stayed the conviction in a defamation case filed against him that jailed him for a period of 2 years and disallowed him from participating in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. 

He had made a remark in a rally in Kolar in April 2019 in the lead up to the Lok Sabha elections wherein he made a mention of Lalit Modi, the man who initiated the Indian Premier League (IPL) and Nirav Modi, a luxury diamond businessman who are currently in a state of exile, residing in the United Kingdom and are a fugitive under the eyes of the Indian law. He asked why all robbers are named Modi, indicating that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is a robber as well. 

Purnesh Modi, A BJP legislator from Surat had filed a criminal defamation case against him stating that it is derogatory towards an OBC (Other Backward Caste) caste. 

Upon revocation Rahul Gandhi attended the monsoon session of the parliament. He received a warm welcome from leaders of the opposition party. He subsequently also changed the bio on his twitter from Dis’qualified MP to Member of Parliament.
