Following the obscene messages sent to actress Ramya on Instagram, the Karnataka State Women’s Commission has stepped up efforts to combat online abuse targeting women. Alarmed by the rising trend of vulgar and abusive language directed at women on social media, the Commission, under the leadership of Chairperson Nagalakshmi Choudhary, is launching a statewide awareness campaign.

The Commission plans to collaborate with cyber police to monitor online platforms more actively. A special lecture series will be held in every district to educate the public on the legal consequences of posting offensive, vulgar, or obscene content about women. Pamphlets and awareness materials will also be distributed.
According to Chairperson Nagalakshmi, many people misuse social media out of ignorance, assuming online actions have no consequences. However, she warned that even a single FIR filed by a woman over an obscene comment can lead to serious legal trouble, including arrest and trial under cyber laws and BNS sections.
Triggered by the Ramya case, the Women’s Commission is determined to ensure that online spaces are safer for women, and offenders are dealt with strictly.
