According to the arrest memo, Ranya attempted to pass through the airport’s Green Channel without declaring any dutiable goods. However, a metal detector flagged concealed items on her person. A thorough personal search revealed gold bars wrapped around her waist and calves with bandages and tissues. Additional gold bars and cut pieces were found hidden in her shoes and front pockets.
The recovered gold, confirmed to be 24-karat, was valued by a government-approved valuer. As she failed to provide proof of purchase or customs declaration, the gold was seized under the Customs Act, 1962. The DRI acted on specific intelligence before intercepting her at the airport.
Following her arrest on March 3, Ranya was taken to the DRI office, where she gave voluntary statements on March 4. The case has raised concerns over increasing gold smuggling attempts through international airports. Authorities continue their investigation into possible links with larger smuggling networks.
Ranya Rao is expected to face legal proceedings under Indian customs laws, with strict penalties for smuggling offences.
