Bengaluru-based mobility platform Rapido is set to begin testing its food delivery app, Ownly, in select neighbourhoods of the city, including Koramangala, HSR Layout, and Sarjapur. The trial phase, expected to start within the next week, will serve as a controlled rollout to fine-tune operations before wider expansion.

Unlike existing market leaders Zomato and Swiggy, Ownly aims to introduce a more restaurant-friendly business model. The platform proposes lower commission rates ranging from 8% to 15%—a significant reduction compared to the 16% to 30% typically charged by established competitors. Rapido’s strategy focuses on offering better margins to restaurant partners while catering to a price-sensitive customer base.

Backed by investors such as Prosus, Nexus Venture Partners, and WestBridge Capital, Rapido plans a phased rollout of Ownly. Bengaluru will remain the primary focus until at least September, with two to three more cities likely to join the network by October. A nationwide presence in 10 cities is targeted by July next year.

As part of its approach, Rapido is in talks with restaurant associations to establish mutual agreements. Discussions reportedly include data-sharing requests from restaurants and pricing commitments from partners. The platform is also promoting budget-friendly meals, encouraging listings under ₹150 to appeal to cost-conscious users.

Meanwhile, Swiggy—ironically one of Rapido’s investors—has launched a competing ₹99 menu, signaling intensifying rivalry in the value-driven food delivery segment.
