In a unique gesture, industrialist Ratan Tata, who passed away recently, has ensured a lifetime of care for his beloved German Shepherd, Tito, as detailed in his will. Tata, known for his love of animals, specifically requested “unlimited care” for Tito, making his pet’s well-being a notable focus of his estate.

Tito, who Tata adopted five or six years ago, is the second of Tata’s dogs to bear this name. The late philanthropist appointed his longtime cook, Rajan Shaw, as Tito’s caretaker, continuing the close bond between the family and Tata’s cherished pet. Rajan, alongside Tata’s butler Subbaiah—both of whom had decades-long relationships with Tata—also received specific provisions in the will. Known for his generosity, Tata frequently gifted Rajan and Subbaiah designer clothing after trips abroad, underscoring his deep appreciation for those in his inner circle.
The will includes additional provisions for Tata’s half-sisters, Shireen and Deanna Jejeebhoy, as well as his mentee Shantanu Naidu. Tata’s philanthropy extended to Naidu’s companionship venture, Goodfellows, from which he relinquished his stake, and he also waived Naidu’s education loans.
With an estate valued at over ₹10,000 crore, Tata’s will reflects his remarkable dedication to those closest to him—humans and animals alike—leaving a legacy of compassion and care.
