Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s long-awaited maiden victory ignited a wave of celebration among RCB fans on June 4. However, the celebrations quickly spiraled into disrespect and destruction around two of the city’s civic icons, Vidhana Soudha and Cubbon Park.

Night of euphoria and damage
A massive crowd surged around Vidhana Soudha and the adjoining High Court lawns, trampling decorative plants, uprooting ground-level saplings, and smashing ornamental pots and barriers. The crowd’s weight flattened delicate greenery, with many ornamental trees crushed or snapped. Barricades and iron rails were climbed and broken down, leaving barricade remnants and torn-up foliage.
Over at Cubbon Park, an ecological lung cherished by residents, the damage was equally extensive. In excitement to see the players, fans broke through the main gates and climbed trees and lamp posts in the vicinity. Young plants and flower beds were trampled underfoot; in some areas, temporary vehicles even mounted the terrain through the children’s section.
Civic outrage and legal action
Enraged by the condition of the park, the Cubbon Park Walkers’ Association is all set to file a formal complaint to the Commissioner at noon today. They are lodging charges against the Chief Secretary, RCB, the Karnataka State Cricket Association, and DNA Networks blaming them for gross negligence and for failing to safeguard public property.
A tragic turn
Amid all this enthusiasm and chaos, 11 fans lost their lives leaving their families shattered.
