Today marks the 70th birthday of one of Bollywood’s most iconic stars, Rekha, whose transformation from Bhanurekha Ganesan to the revered diva of Indian cinema is nothing short of extraordinary.
Born out of wedlock to Tamil actor Gemini Ganesan and Telugu actress Pushpavalli, Rekha's early years were marked by challenges. At the age of 13, she made her film debut in the Telugu movie Rangula Ratnam (1966), leaving school to support her family during financial hardship. Her Bollywood debut followed in 1970 with Sawan Bhadon, a commercial success that launched her career in Hindi cinema.

Rekha cemented her legacy with unforgettable roles in Muqaddar Ka Sikandar (1978) and Silsila (1981). Her portrayal of a courtesan in Umrao Jaan (1981) is widely regarded as one of her finest performances, earning her a National Film Award for Best Actress.
Though her personal life remained shrouded in mystery, Rekha's professional journey has been one of reinvention, from leading lady to character roles in Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi and Krrish.
Honored with the Padma Shri in 2010, Rekha’s contribution to Indian cinema remains unparalleled, as does her timeless beauty and grace.
