Gena Rowlands, the legendary actress whose indelible performances left a profound mark on the world of cinema, has passed away at the age of 94. She died peacefully at her home in Indian Wells, surrounded by family, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease, Hollywood Reporter notes.

Rowlands’ career, which spanned over six decades, was defined by her extraordinary ability to bring complex, deeply human characters to life. She earned critical acclaim and Oscar nominations for her roles in “A Woman Under the Influence” (1974) and “Gloria” (1980). In the former, Rowlands gave a heart-wrenching portrayal of an emotionally fragile housewife, a performance that continues to resonate with audiences for its raw, unflinching honesty. In “Gloria,” she showcased her versatility, transforming into a fierce protector entangled with the Mob, a role that solidified her status as one of cinema’s most formidable talents.

Though she never won a competitive Academy Award, Rowlands was rightfully honored with an honorary Oscar at the 2015 Governors Awards, a testament to her enduring impact on the industry.

Her most significant collaborations were with her late husband, director John Cassavetes, whose films such as “Faces” (1968), “Opening Night” (1977), and “Love Streams” (1984) featured some of Rowlands’ most unforgettable work.

With her passing, cinema loses one of its brightest stars, but Gena Rowlands’ legacy will continue to inspire generations of actors and filmmakers.
