  • Criticism in sports should focus on performance, not personal insults
  • Body-shaming or attacking athletes discourages sportsmanship and respect
  • Constructive feedback uplifts sports, while abuse only demeans it

Sportspersons dedicate their lives to bringing glory to their nations, yet they often face unwarranted abuse and personal attacks. The recent controversy involving Congress spokesperson Shama Mohamed’s remarks on Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma highlights the pressing need for respectful discourse in sports criticism.

Mohamed’s now-deleted social media post described Sharma as “fat for a sportsperson” and “the most unimpressive captain India has ever had,” triggering widespread backlash. While analysis and critique are integral to sports discussions, personal insults and body-shaming cross ethical boundaries.

The BJP swiftly condemned Mohamed’s comments, with leader Radhika Khera accusing Congress of having “humiliated athletes for decades.” Cricket fans and sports analysts also pointed out the inappropriateness of ridiculing a player’s physique rather than evaluating his skills.

Responding to a user defending Sharma as a "world-class player," Mohamed further dismissed his achievements, saying, “What is so world-class about him when compared to his predecessors? He is a mediocre captain as well as a mediocre player who got lucky to be the captain of India.”

Criticism in sports should be constructive and based on performance rather than personal attributes. Athletes endure immense pressure, rigorous training, and public scrutiny. Insulting them over their appearance or personal traits not only undermines their contributions but also sets a poor precedent for public discourse.

Sports should be a platform of respect and admiration, where debates focus on skills, strategy, and achievements rather than personal attacks. Constructive criticism strengthens sports; abuse only demeans it.
