Salient Features of the New Pamban Bridge:
- Vertical Lift Mechanism: The bridge incorporates an electro-mechanical vertical lift span that can be raised to allow ships to pass through. This mechanism enables the central section of the bridge to elevate to a height of 22 meters, facilitating maritime traffic beneath it.
- Enhanced Connectivity: Spanning 2.05 kilometers, the bridge replaces the old structure built in 1914, thereby improving rail connectivity between the mainland and Rameswaram Island.
- Modern Engineering: Designed with a double-track system and electrification capabilities, the bridge supports increased train speeds and efficiency.
- Improved Maritime Navigation: The vertical lift design allows for smoother navigation through the Palk Strait, as the central span can be raised in just five minutes, minimizing disruption to both rail and maritime traffic.
The New Pamban Bridge stands as a significant milestone in India's infrastructure development, showcasing advanced engineering to enhance transportation and connectivity in the region.
