To tackle the growing problem of obesity and other lifestyle-related illnesses, the Health Ministry has launched a new campaign that will put cigarette-style health warnings on popular deep-fried and sugary snacks. Foods like samosas, jalebis, pakoras etc often high in oil, sugar, and trans fats will be part of a new “health alert list” aimed at making people more aware of what they eat.

The campaign has started in Nagpur, with AIIMS Nagpur chosen as the first location. Cafeterias and food stalls there have put up large posters near food counters. These posters called “oil and sugar boards” show how much sugar, oil and unhealthy fats are in popular snacks. They also warn about health problems like obesity, diabetes and heart disease that can come from eating these foods regularly as well.
The warnings are designed to stand out, similar to those found on cigarette packets, so people notice them before buying food. This is not a ban. These snacks will still be available but with clear health information to help people make better food choices. The goal is to make people more aware of what they eat and reduce lifestyle-related diseases in the long run.The campaign is expected to expand to more hospitals, schools, and public places in the coming months.
