Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri recipient S.S Badrinath who was the founder of Sankara Nethralaya (a not-for-profit missionary institution for ophthalmic care headquartered in Chennai but with branches across the nation including Bengaluru) passed away owing to a long term illness at the age of 83. Prime Minister Modi offered his condolences on this occasion. “Deeply saddened by the passing of Dr. SS Badrinath Ji, a visionary, expert in ophthalmology and founder of Sankara Nethralaya. His contributions to eye care and his relentless service to society have left an indelible mark. His work will continue to inspire generations. Condolences to his family and loved ones. Om Shanti,” he stated.

Director of the Hindu Publishing Group N Ram also paid his respects. “Let us pay our respects to Dr S.S. Badrinath, who passed away at his home in the early hours of Tuesday, November 21, 2023. The founder of Chennai’s great medical institution, Sankara Nethralaya, an internationally reputed vitreoretinal surgeon, an inspiring and charismatic institution builder, a legend in the field of scientific and compassionate medicine — he transformed eye care in India — he remained humble till the end, considering himself an “ordinary man”,” he expressed.
Ram also added that Badrinath demonstrated his commitment even at the time of his death. “Dr Badrinath left instructions that after his death, there should be no elaborate rituals, no fuss; that people working at Sankara Nethralaya should not stop working for a second to mourn his passing; and that they could, if they wished, wear black arm-bands; and, finally, that he should be cremated in a simple manner, as befits an “ordinary man”. We must respect and honour his wishes,” he mentioned.
