The Supreme Court on Thursday sharply criticized Madhya Pradesh BJP Minister Kunwar Vijay Shah over his derogatory remarks about Indian Army officer Colonel Sofiya Qureshi. The Court refused to intervene in the FIR lodged against him, at least for the time being.

The controversy stems from a ruling by the Madhya Pradesh High Court on May 14, which ordered that an FIR be filed against Shah for making "hate speech" against Colonel Qureshi. Shah approached the Supreme Court, seeking relief from the High Court's decision. When his plea was urgently mentioned before the bench, Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai expressed strong disapproval of Shah’s comments. “A person holding constitutional office is expected to act responsibly. What kind of statements is he making? Is it appropriate for a minister to make such statements?” CJI Gavai questioned.
The High Court had acted on its own, initiating proceedings against Shah after he referred to Colonel Qureshi as a “sister of terrorists,” describing his comments as “scurrilous” and “language of the gutters.” Shah’s lawyer argued that the minister had apologized and expressed remorse, claiming his statements were misunderstood and sensationalized by the media.
Despite the apology, CJI Gavai made it clear that such remarks are especially impactful coming from a public figure in a sensitive context. “Every sentence uttered by a person in such a position is heard, especially when the country is going through a sensitive situation,” the CJI said. He further remarked, “You know who you are nothing will happen in 24 hours.”
The Supreme Court did not issue an order staying the FIR but agreed to hear Shah's appeal on Friday.
