Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud, on Thursday, made a heartfelt appeal to doctors across the country to resume work amidst ongoing protests over the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata. The protest, now in its 11th day, has significantly disrupted patient care in various hospitals nationwide.

Addressing concerns during a Supreme Court hearing, the Chief Justice assured the protesting doctors that no adverse action would be taken against them by the hospitals if they returned to work. "Let them all return to work... we will pass some general order. Once doctors resume duties, we will prevail upon authorities to not take adverse actions," Justice Chandrachud stated.
The plea from the Chief Justice came after counsel representing resident doctors of AIIMS Nagpur and PGI Chandigarh expressed concerns about punitive actions being taken against those participating in the protests. They highlighted issues such as deductions in casual leave for those involved in the demonstrations.
Emphasizing the need for continuity in healthcare services, the Chief Justice urged, "How will public administrative structure run if they don't resume work?" He encouraged the doctors to return to their duties and assured them that if any further difficulties arise, they could approach the Supreme Court.
The protesting doctors are demanding the implementation of the Central Protection Act to ensure the safety and security of healthcare professionals across the country.
