In a major setback for actor Kamal Haasan and his Thug Life film team, the Supreme Court on Monday declined to hear a petition seeking permission to release the movie in Karnataka and provide police protection. Thug Life, released globally on June 5, has not seen a release in Karnataka due to protests by Kannada organizations. The groups are demanding an apology from Kamal Haasan over past remarks that have angered Kannadigas. Activists warned of a statewide bandh if the movie were screened in the state.

Earlier, the film’s team had petitioned the Karnataka High Court requesting security for theatres screening the film. However, the High Court postponed the hearing, observing that the issue could have been resolved had Haasan issued an apology.

Facing uncertainty, the producers moved the Supreme Court, seeking intervention for the film’s release and protection in Karnataka. The court, however, refused to entertain the plea and advised them to return to the High Court.

The controversy has cast a shadow over the film’s release in Karnataka, with Kamal Haasan remaining firm on his decision not to apologize. With the Supreme Court's refusal, the fate of Thug Life in Karnataka now hinges on the High Court’s response in the coming days.
