Veteran actor Shabana Azmi has expressed her disapproval following an incident where Kangana Ranaut, a fellow actor and BJP's newly-elected MP, was allegedly slapped and verbally abused by a CISF constable at Chandigarh airport. "I have no love lost for Kangana Ranaut. But I can't find myself joining this chorus of celebrating 'the slap'. If security personnel start taking the law into their hands, none of us can be safe," Azmi tweeted early on Saturday.

Azmi’s comments come in the context of ongoing legal tensions between Ranaut and her husband, Javed Akhtar. In 2020, Akhtar filed a defamation lawsuit against Ranaut, claiming that her comments regarding Sushant Singh Rajput's death damaged his reputation.

The altercation at Chandigarh airport occurred on Tuesday as Ranaut was undergoing a security check before boarding Vistara flight UK707 to Delhi. Ranaut, who recently secured the parliamentary seat from Himachal Pradesh's Mandi, stated that a CISF constable approached her, struck her in the face, and began hurling abuses. Ranaut claimed that when she questioned the constable, the latter justified the assault by referencing support for the 2020 farmers' protests.

The incident has drawn widespread attention and mixed reactions. Azmi's statement underscores concerns about security personnel acting outside the bounds of legal authority, stressing the need for adherence to lawful conduct by those entrusted with public safety.
