The Shankaracharya of the Jyotirmath Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswat recently met the former Chief Minister of Maharashtra Uddhav Thackery at his residence in Mumbai on 14th July. In an interaction with reporters, Shankaracharya remarked that Uddhav was a victim of betrayal.

This was said in reference to Chief Minister Eknath Shinde creating a faction within the Shiv Sena (SS) and forming a government with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) IN 2022. BJP MP Kangana Ranaut defended Eknath Shinde amidst the allegations. “In politics, it is very normal and constitutional to have alliances, treaties and division of a party. Congress party was divided in 1907 and then again in 1971. If a politician does not do politics in politics, will he sell golgappas? Religion also says that if the king himself starts exploiting the populace then treason is the final resort,” Kangana stated on the microblogging site X (formerly known as Twitter).

Kangana accused Shankaracharya of belittling the Hindu religion. “Shankaracharya Ji has hurt our sentiments by using derogatory words against the honourable Chief Minister of Maharashtra Eknath Shinde and accusing him of being a traitor and a betrayer. Shankaracharya Ji is insulting the dignity of the Hindu religion by saying such low level and petty things,” Kangana added. PM Modi sought the blessings of Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswat during their encounter at Anant Ambani’s wedding.
