Congress MP Shashi Tharoor sharply rebuked US President Donald Trump’s assertion that his administration played a central role in brokering a ceasefire between India and Pakistan. Tharoor called Trump’s comments “Disappointing” and outlined four main concerns from India’s perspective.

First, Tharoor said the statement falsely equates India, the victim of terrorism with Pakistan, the state known for supporting cross-border terrorism. He emphasized that India has not harbored terrorists or engaged in attacks like the 26/11 Mumbai assault, making any comparison with Pakistan misleading and unjust.
Second, Tharoor criticized the idea of offering Pakistan a platform for negotiation, asserting that nations sponsoring terrorism should not be rewarded with diplomatic leverage. According to him, India would never enter talks under such coercive conditions.
Third, Tharoor pointed out that Trump's remarks risk internationalizing the Kashmir issue, which India views strictly as a domestic matter and has consistently opposed foreign intervention in.
Lastly, he said the statement undermines India's individual global standing by re-linking it with Pakistan in diplomatic discourse, a move India has long resisted, especially after 2000 when US Presidents stopped jointly visiting both nations.
Although Trump claimed credit for averting a potential nuclear conflict by using trade incentives, Indian officials denied that trade discussions played any role in the ceasefire understanding reached on May 10.
