Shopify CEO Tobias Lutke has set a bold new direction for the company, placing Artificial Intelligence (AI) at the center of its operations. In a memo shared with employees and later posted on X, Lutke emphasized that using AI is no longer optional, it’s now a fundamental expectation for everyone at Shopify including executives.

He stated that before requesting new hires or additional resources, teams must first prove that AI cannot do the task. Lutke encouraged staff to think of AI as an integral team member, asking them to envision their work as if autonomous AI agents were already part of the team.

This shift aligns with Shopify’s core values of continuous learning and adapting to change. Lutke stressed that AI is transforming the nature of work faster than any trend he has seen in his career. He personally uses AI frequently and believes most people including himself are only beginning to understand its full potential.
To help employees adapt, Shopify will not evaluate AI usage in performance and peer reviews. Workers are expected to develop skills in prompting, context loading, and effective use of AI tools. Lutke admitted this is a learning process but one that’s crucial for modern productivity.
Shopify has already rolled out various AI tools, including Sidekick which is a chatbot for business owners, and ‘Shopify Magic,’ a suite of automation features. Developers also have access to platforms like Copilot, Claude, and Cursor, in addition to internal tools like chat.shopify.io.
Lutke described AI as a massive productivity booster, saying employees who embrace it have accomplished previously unthinkable tasks with output increasing by up to 100 times. He wants the early stages of all projects to be driven by AI experimentation, which he believes speeds up learning and innovation.
While Shopify sees this as a huge opportunity, the broader tech world is still debating the long-term impact of AI on jobs. Some experts believe coding itself could become obsolete, as AI now handles a significant portion of programming in companies like OpenAI and Google.
