Why is Microsoft shutting down Skype? Teams is the reason
Microsoft has announced it will retire its once-popular video-calling platform, Skype, on May 5, 2025. The move is part of a broader strategy to streamline communication tools under Microsoft Teams — now the company’s flagship hub for modern messaging, calling, and collaboration. The tech giant explained the decision aims to "more easily adapt to customer needs" by focusing on a single, comprehensive platform.

Microsoft plans to transfer Skype users to Teams
With the shutdown confirmed, Microsoft is encouraging Skype users to migrate to Teams. The February-to-May transition window was designed to provide users with sufficient time to adjust.
But what if you are a paid user?
New subscriptions for Skype Credit and calling plans have been halted. However, existing paid users can continue using their credits until their current billing cycle ends. Even after decommissioning, users will retain access to their credit and the Skype Dial Pad, available through the web or Teams.
Planning to move to Teams? Here's how you can
Transitioning to Teams will be simple: users can log in using their Skype credentials. Microsoft assures that all contacts, chats, and conversations will be automatically transferred, with added features like calendar integration and community tools in Teams.
All in all: Teams is the new Skype
With Skype’s farewell approaching, Microsoft is firmly positioning Teams as its next-gen communication platform.
