  • Disruptions: Snoring, restlessness, screens affect sleep
  • Health Boost: Better sleep lowers stress, strengthens bonds.

A global sleep study has highlighted a growing trend of “sleep divorce” in India, where couples are choosing to sleep separately to improve sleep quality. According to the 2025 Global Sleep Survey, India leads in sleep divorce, with 78% of couples opting for separate sleeping arrangements, followed by China (67%) and South Korea (65%).

The study, which surveyed over 30,000 individuals across 13 countries, underscores a global sleep crisis, with stress, anxiety, and lifestyle pressures contributing to poor sleep quality. Key reasons for disrupted sleep include a partner’s snoring, restlessness, mismatched schedules, and screen use in bed. Older generations reported higher instances of sleep separation due to these disturbances.

Despite societal perceptions, many couples report that sleeping apart has led to better sleep and even strengthened relationships. Improved rest has been linked to reduced stress and enhanced overall well-being. However, experts highlight the benefits of co-sleeping, which promotes oxytocin release—improving emotional health, reducing stress, and increasing relationship satisfaction.

With 69% of Indians citing stress as a leading cause of poor sleep, prioritizing quality rest has become crucial. Experts emphasize the need for a balanced approach, where couples find sleep solutions that work best for their health and relationship. As awareness of sleep hygiene grows, the trend of sleep divorce is likely to continue evolving.
