Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi has sharply criticised the Indian government's silence over the ongoing conflict in Gaza and the recent Israeli strikes on Iran, calling it a betrayal of the country’s diplomatic values. Writing in a leading newspaper, Gandhi said India's muted response to escalating tensions in West Asia marks a departure from its historic commitment to peace, particularly the two-state solution for Israel and Palestine.

She noted that Israel’s strike on Iran on June 13, 2025, was an unlawful attack on Iranian sovereignty, further destabilising an already volatile region. Gandhi accused the Modi-led government of abandoning a principled foreign policy and missing the opportunity to act as a diplomatic bridge, especially when India's strategic ties with both Israel and Iran could have been leveraged to promote de-escalation.
The Congress leader also criticised the Israeli government for nurturing extremism and escalating tensions rather than seeking dialogue. She highlighted the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, where over 55,000 Palestinians have reportedly died since October 2023, calling Israel’s military response disproportionate.
Gandhi also expressed disappointment with US President Donald Trump’s statements downplaying American intelligence and raising alarm over Iran’s nuclear ambitions. She reminded readers of Iran’s past support for India, particularly on the Kashmir issue, and called for a return to diplomacy and fact-based leadership in global affairs.
