Singer Sonu Nigam has come under fire following remarks made during a recent performance in Bengaluru, where he allegedly drew a controversial comparison between a fan's request and a terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir. A pro-Kannada organisation, Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (KRV), has filed a police complaint against the singer, accusing him of hurting the sentiments of the Kannadiga community.

The incident took place at a musical event held on April 25-26 at East Point College of Engineering and Technology in Virgonagar. A video circulating on social media shows Nigam recounting how a fan demanded he sing in Kannada. In his response, the singer appeared to compare the fan’s behaviour to the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, which claimed the lives of 26 civilians, many of whom were tourists.
The KRV's Bengaluru district president submitted a formal complaint alleging that Nigam’s comments incited linguistic hatred and could provoke unrest. The complaint highlights how equating a cultural request to an act of terrorism portrays Kannadigas in a negative light, despite their reputation for being peace-loving.
Nigam did express his fondness for the Kannada language during the event, but his reference to the Pahalgam attack triggered widespread criticism. The April 22 attack in Pahalgam has already heightened tensions between India and Pakistan, with authorities suspecting cross-border terrorism. The controversy adds a fresh layer of sensitivity amid an already strained national atmosphere.
When reports last came in, the Bengaluru police have filed an FIR against the singer under section 351(2) of BNS.
