The South Western Railway (SWR) has launched a new initiative, the Machine Booked Travel Ticket (M-UTS), to tackle passenger congestion at railway stations during peak times, such as festivals and holidays. The M-UTS system allows passengers to obtain tickets more conveniently, reducing the need to stand in long queues and risk missing their trains.

To assess its effectiveness, the M-UTS has been piloted at three key stations in Bengaluru: Krantiveera Sangolli Rayanna (KSR), Sir M. Visvesvaraya Terminal, and Yeshwantpur. The trial aims to streamline ticket distribution and ensure a hassle-free experience for travelers.

Benefits of M-UTS
M-UTS is designed to address several challenges faced by commuters. Previously, long queues often led to passengers missing their trains or traveling without tickets, risking penalties from ticket inspectors. With M-UTS, tickets can be purchased efficiently, reducing traffic inside stations and enabling more passengers to travel legally.

How M-UTS Works
Unlike the existing UTS app, M-UTS involves railway staff issuing tickets through automated machines. Tickets can be purchased up to 500 meters from the station premises, with provisions for e-tickets as well. Passengers must begin their journey within one hour of ticket issuance.

This system is expected to significantly improve passenger convenience during high-traffic days, offering a modern solution to longstanding challenges in railway ticketing.
