  • Stadium reopens after 8 months of suspension
  • Enhanced safety steps introduced to prevent mishaps

Eight months after the tragic stampede, the Siddaramaiah-led government gives green signal for IPL and international matches at Bengaluru’s iconic Chinnaswamy Stadium.

June 4, 2025, remains one of the darkest days in the history of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Karnataka cricket. A tragic stampede outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium during celebrations had cast a long shadow over the venue, forcing a halt to all major cricket events. Eight months later, the gloom has finally lifted.

The Karnataka government, led by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, has now granted official permission to resume IPL and international cricket matches at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. The decision was approved in a cabinet meeting and later announced formally, bringing cheer to thousands of RCB supporters.

With this clearance, the iconic stadium will host the opening match of the 2026 IPL season, along with several high-profile international fixtures. This marks the return of top-level cricket to Chinnaswamy after a prolonged suspension.

Before the cabinet decision, a high-level meeting was held under the leadership of Home Minister Dr. G. Parameshwar. The meeting included Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) President Venkatesh Prasad and senior officials. During the discussion, authorities presented a detailed safety inspection report of the stadium and surrounding areas. After reviewing all safety measures, there was a unanimous opinion that matches could safely be conducted at the venue. The key points of this meeting were later placed before the cabinet.

Welcoming the decision, KSCA President Venkatesh Prasad expressed gratitude to the state government and the Home Minister for their support. He praised the cabinet’s positive approach and confirmed that urgent preparations for the IPL opener are already underway. He also stated that RCB management and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have fully backed the plan.

Following last year’s tragedy, both the state government and KSCA have implemented enhanced crowd management and safety protocols to prevent any recurrence. With these precautions in place, cricket lovers are eagerly waiting to witness the electrifying atmosphere of live matches once again at Chinnaswamy Stadium.
