Ongoing tensions between the Karnataka government and KSCA, coupled with safety concerns at Chinnaswamy Stadium, have pushed Royal Challengers Bengaluru to explore Pune as a new IPL home venue, dealing a potential blow to Bengaluru fans.

The possibility of IPL matches moving out of Bengaluru is growing stronger, as Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) actively explores a new home ground amid strained relations between the Karnataka government and the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA).

The uncertainty traces back to June 4, 2025, when a tragic stampede occurred outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium during RCB’s victory celebrations. The incident claimed 11 lives and left over 50 people injured. Since then, not a single international match has been hosted at the iconic stadium, raising serious concerns about safety and event management.

With Bengaluru now facing the risk of losing IPL hosting rights, the RCB franchise has begun scouting alternative venues. Pune, under the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA), has emerged as the franchise’s top choice. According to franchise assessments, hosting matches in Pune could draw fans from neighbouring states, boosting attendance. The Pune stadium also offers seating for over 11,000 more spectators compared to Chinnaswamy, making it commercially attractive.

However, the situation has become more competitive. Following RCB’s interest, Rajasthan Royals (RR) have also initiated discussions with MCA officials to shift their home matches to Pune. RR’s move comes after reported disputes with Rajasthan Cricket Association officials last season, particularly over ticketing issues in Jaipur, prompting the franchise to consider moving out of its traditional base.

Despite these developments, MCA officials have not given a green signal to either RCB or RR. While RCB reportedly held discussions with MCA officials nearly two months ago, no final decision has been communicated. This lack of clarity has reportedly left MCA officials uncertain about RCB’s actual plans.

Meanwhile, questions remain over why RCB is hesitant to return to Chinnaswamy despite having a strong and loyal fan base in Bengaluru. Reports have pointed to serious allegations linking the franchise to lapses that led to the stampede, adding to the franchise’s reluctance to host matches in the city.

Pune, which last hosted IPL matches in 2022, has not seen a single IPL game in the past three years. The MCA is keen to bring back the high-profile, revenue-rich tournament. As things stand, two major IPL franchises are competing for Pune’s hosting rights, and the final decision is awaited.
