  • Ishan Kishan’s form has disrupted Team India’s opening plans
  • Sanju Samson’s poor series raises doubts over his selection
  • Management yet to finalise the World Cup opening combination

Strong series win over New Zealand boosts confidence, but selection confusion over openers puts Team India management under pressure before the mega tournament.

Team India are preparing to enter the T20 World Cup arena with renewed confidence following their convincing series victory against New Zealand. As defending champions in the 2024 edition, expectations are sky-high, especially with the tournament being held at home. However, despite impressive performances, the team management is facing a serious selection headache.

The Indian team, led by Suryakumar Yadav, delivered a strong showing in the preparatory series against the Black Caps. Yet, the clarity the management hoped to gain ahead of the World Cup has instead turned into confusion, particularly around the opening combination.

Before the New Zealand series, the team management had a clear plan. Shubman Gill was dropped, and Sanju Samson was promoted as an opener alongside aggressive youngster Abhishek Sharma. However, that strategy failed to deliver results. Sanju Samson struggled throughout the series, failing in all five matches and managing only 46 runs as an opener.

In contrast, Ishan Kishan produced a standout performance. His explosive batting across four matches yielded 215 runs, forcing the selectors to rethink their approach. Kishan’s form has emerged as a major talking point, effectively overturning the management’s earlier plans and reopening the debate over the ideal playing XI.

With the World Cup approaching, the key question is who should partner Abhishek Sharma at the top. Sanju Samson’s inconsistency has weakened his case, while Ishan Kishan’s aggressive and fearless approach strengthens his claim. However, selecting Kishan creates a new challenge, as it results in an all left-handed top order if Tilak Varma returns at number three.

The management, including head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Suryakumar Yadav, now face a tough call. While Sanju Samson is widely regarded as a skilled and talented cricketer, his repeated failures have put his place in doubt. With Tilak Varma also making a comeback, Samson could miss out on the World Cup playing XI altogether.

If the management opts for Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan as openers, India could field one of the most aggressive opening pairs in the tournament. Both are known for their fearless stroke play and power-hitting ability, capable of dismantling bowling attacks once settled.

For now, the opening combination remains undecided. Whether the team prioritises batting combinations or current form will determine the final call. The answer to this crucial question is expected to emerge as the World Cup draws closer.
