The Olympic medallist steps away from competitive badminton, citing severe knee pain and long-term injuries that kept her off the court for nearly two years.

Indian badminton icon Saina Nehwal has officially announced her retirement from professional badminton, bringing an end to a celebrated career marked by historic achievements and global recognition. The decision comes after a prolonged struggle with knee injuries, which prevented her from returning to competitive play over the past two years.

Saina, who has been battling severe knee pain, revealed that her body is no longer able to handle the physical demands and pressure of high-intensity competitive sport. Due to persistent injuries, she remained away from the court for nearly two years, ultimately forcing her to take the difficult decision to retire.

The former world number one last featured in an international tournament at the 2023 Singapore Open. However, she did not make an official retirement announcement at that time. Clarifying her decision later, Saina stated that she had effectively stepped away from the sport two years ago and did not feel the need to make a formal declaration earlier.

Saina is best remembered for winning the bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics, a landmark moment in Indian badminton history. Over the years, she became one of the most recognised faces of Indian sport, inspiring a generation of players.

Speaking during a podcast, Saina explained that she entered the sport by her own choice and was leaving it the same way. She emphasised that when an athlete realises they can no longer compete at the required level, it is important to stop at the right time.

She further disclosed that high-intensity training was no longer possible due to knee damage. Medical assessments revealed cartilage wear and tear and arthritis, making recovery extremely challenging. She also shared that she informed her parents and coaches about her condition and her inability to continue, acknowledging that the decision was difficult but necessary.

With this announcement, Saina Nehwal formally closes a significant chapter in Indian badminton.
