The 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup final at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad, will be remembered as a historic moment in cricket, thanks to a sensational performance by Sanju Samson. Team India defeated New Zealand national cricket team with a commanding display, and Samson emerged as the star of the match, achieving a rare and remarkable milestone in T20 cricket history.

Chasing records and breaking barriers, Sanju Samson scored a crucial half-century in the final, following two strong innings in the Super-8 (97 against West Indies) and semifinal (89 against England). By scoring 89 runs in the final against New Zealand, Samson became the seventh batter in the world to score 50 or more runs in three consecutive T20 World Cup innings, and only the third Indian player to do so. Previously, this elite feat had been achieved by Virat Kohli and K.L. Rahul.

This achievement is particularly significant because Samson accomplished it within a single edition of the World Cup, unlike Virat Kohli, who achieved consecutive 50+ scores across the 2016 and 2021 editions. In the 2026 edition, Samson’s consistency in the Super-8, semifinal, and final played a pivotal role in India’s dominant performance.

Despite captain Suryakumar Yadav falling cheaply, Shivam Dube shone in the final overs, scoring 26 runs off 8 balls and helping India reach 255/5 in 20 overs.

Chasing the daunting total of 256, New Zealand struggled under pressure. India’s bowling attack dominated from the start, with Jasprit Bumrah claiming 4 wickets for just 15 runs in 4 overs, Axar Patel taking 3 wickets, while Varun Chakravarthy, Arshdeep Singh, and Hardik Pandya picked up one wicket each. Under relentless pressure, New Zealand were bowled out for 159 runs in 19 overs, handing India a comfortable victory.

He credited guidance from senior players and his mentor: “Lots of guidance and suggestions from senior players have helped me. For the last couple of months, I have been in constant touch with Sachin sir. I focused on my mindset and had big conversations with him. He even called me yesterday to check on me. If I am getting guidance from someone like him, what more can I ask? I am very grateful to everyone who supported me.”
