In a major announcement celebrating women’s cricket, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has declared that a new cricket stadium in Siliguri will be named after wicketkeeper-batter Richa Ghosh, who played a crucial role in India’s ICC Women’s World Cup triumph. The upcoming Richa Cricket Stadium will be constructed on a 27-acre plot at the Chandmani Tea Estate in Siliguri, Ghosh’s hometown.

Banerjee said the project will be undertaken by the state government as a tribute to one of Bengal’s brightest sporting talents. “This is our way of honouring Richa and encouraging more young players from north Bengal to pursue cricket,” Banerjee stated during the announcement.

Richa Ghosh, 22, was also recently honoured with the Banga Bhushan award, appointed as a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), and received a gold chain from the state government. The Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) had earlier felicitated her at Eden Gardens, with Chief Minister Banerjee and CAB President Sourav Ganguly in attendance.
