Smriti Mandhana-led Royal Challengers Bengaluru aim for a strong start against title holders Mumbai Indians in the Women’s Premier League opener at DY Patil Stadium.
The countdown to Women’s Premier League (WPL) Season 4 is over, with cricket fans eagerly awaiting the opening match scheduled to be held today at the DY Patil Stadium. The tournament begins with a blockbuster encounter between defending champions Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), two of the strongest and most high-profile teams in the league.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru enter the new season with renewed confidence and fresh energy. After a disappointing campaign last year that saw them fall short of reaching the final, RCB have rebuilt their squad aggressively at the mega auction. The team management invested heavily in star players, making the squad stronger and more competitive than before. This season, Bengaluru are determined to script a new chapter and push hard for their maiden WPL title.
Led by captain Smriti Mandhana, RCB appear to be a more balanced unit this time. The team boasts depth across batting, bowling and fielding, making them well-suited for the fast-paced T20 format. The presence of multiple all-rounders is expected to give the side added flexibility and strength, while the inclusion of young players has further boosted team morale.

RCB’s overseas signings have also drawn significant attention. Lauren Bell, Grace Harris, Linsey Smith, Georgia Wareham and Nadine de Klerk have all joined the squad this season. Known for their match-winning abilities, these international stars have added firepower to the Bengaluru lineup and raised expectations among fans.
However, RCB will miss Australian all-rounder Ellyse Perry, who is unavailable this season due to personal reasons. Perry has been one of the team’s most consistent performers over the last three seasons, and her absence is seen as a major setback. While the team does have capable all-rounders to fill the gap, Perry’s experience and impact will be difficult to replace.
On the other side, Mumbai Indians step into the season under pressure to defend their title. After the mega auction, the squad appears slightly unsettled, with a noticeable lack of experienced domestic players. The team seems heavily dependent on its overseas stars. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur carries the added responsibility of guiding the side through these challenges while managing the expectations of retaining the championship.
