Land earmarked for university currently under BBMP

BBMP considering waste-to-energy facility on same land

Localites want sports facility, not a waste processing facility

The Karnataka State Sports University project, an ambitious initiative by the state government to establish a sports university on the outskirts of Bengaluru, has encountered a significant obstacle.

A substantial portion of the land earmarked for the university is currently under the jurisdiction of the BBMP, which is actively considering the establishment of a waste-to-energy facility on the same land.

The proposed sports university is designed to offer comprehensive amenities for athletes, including training facilities and residential accommodations. This project was initiated during the tenure of the BJP government when KC Narayana Gowda served as the sports minister.

Official sources within the Department of Sports and Youth Empowerment reveal that approximately 115 acres of gomala land in Mavallipura (Hesraghatta Hobli), located near Yelahanka, is in question.

Out of this land, the BBMP was allocated 100 acres for the potential waste-to-energy unit. It is worth noting that Mavallipura had been a dumping site for many years until protests by local residents prompted its closure.

The BBMP is yet to commence work on the proposed processing unit, and sources within the sports department indicate that the BBMP is currently unwilling to relinquish control of the land.

According to sources, the land is presently under the jurisdiction of the BBMP, and any decision regarding its transfer to the sports department will ultimately be made by the government.

Despite some opposition from the community against the establishment of a waste-to-energy unit, there is a strong desire among residents to see a sports facility in this location. The preference is for a sports city, not a waste processing facility.
