Vehicular movement between Tamil Nadu and Bengaluru came to a standstill on Saturday after a structural anomaly was discovered on the Hosur elevated highway. Authorities identified a lateral shift, a horizontal displacement of the highway’s structure which raised serious safety concerns, prompting officials to immediately halt all traffic on the affected stretch.

The elevated highway, a crucial part of the Bengaluru-Chennai National Highway, serves as a major connector between Hosur and Bengaluru, especially for vehicles arriving from Salem, Chennai, and Krishnagiri. Due to the sudden closure, traffic chaos ensued, with jams stretching up to three kilometers reported near the Hosur bus stand.
Officials declared the flyover unsafe for public use and redirected vehicles to the service roads running parallel to the highway. However, these alternate routes are not equipped to handle such a high volume of traffic, leading to significant delays and commuter frustration.
A team of structural experts is scheduled to assess the flyover on Sunday to determine the extent of the damage and investigate the underlying cause of the lateral shift. Depending on the findings, further decisions will be made regarding repair timelines and the reopening of the highway.
The Hosur elevated highway was originally constructed to reduce congestion on the busy Hosur Road, which links Bengaluru’s Silk Board Junction to the Electronics City IT corridor. Its closure has reignited concerns over the durability of critical infrastructure in high-traffic zones.
