The college’s circular had sparked criticism for banning Islamic religious markers while allowing others, such as tilaks and bindis, which the court highlighted during the hearing. The Supreme Court’s ruling permits students to wear the hijab on campus, but it clarified that burqas would not be allowed inside the college premises.

In its defense, the college argued that allowing the hijab could lead to a rise in students wearing saffron shawls, potentially creating a tense atmosphere and sparking controversy. However, the court advised the college to seek further legal recourse if any such issues arise.

The case has reignited discussions around the empowerment of women and their right to choose their attire, particularly in educational settings. The court’s decision is seen as a significant stance on the balance between religious freedom and institutional regulations, underscoring the importance of individual choice in matters of personal faith.

As the debate continues, the court’s ruling serves as a reminder of the complexities surrounding the intersection of education, religion, and personal rights in India
