Suriya’s ambitious fantasy thriller Kanguva is grappling with major financial challenges as its box office performance continues to falter. Despite being pitched as a grand cinematic spectacle, the film has managed only ₹64.30 crore after nine days, a far cry from its staggering ₹300 crore budget. On Day 9, the film earned just ₹0.61 crore, a significant 68% drop from Thursday’s ₹1.9 crore, according to Sacnilk.

The underwhelming performance has reportedly left production house Studio Green facing heavy losses. In a bid to mitigate the fallout, Suriya is rumoured to be considering a pay cut or even returning part of his fee. Additionally, there are talks of him committing to a lower-budget project for the studio to help recover the deficit.
Compounding the challenges, Kanguva faced stiff competition from other Tamil releases, notably Sivakarthikeyan’s Amaran, which has dominated box office charts. Despite its high production values, star-studded cast, and extensive marketing campaign, Kanguva struggled to resonate with audiences, drawing mixed-to-negative reviews.
The film’s poor performance has also impacted Suriya’s other ventures. His planned Bollywood debut, Karna, a ₹350 crore epic directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, has reportedly been shelved due to financial concerns.
However, there’s hope for redemption with a sequel to Kanguva announced for 2026, featuring Suriya’s brother, Karthi, as the antagonist. Meanwhile, Suriya is set to return with Suriya 44 and Suriya 45, promising fresh opportunities to regain his box office standing.
