Tata Group has secured the opportunity to kickstart the production of Apple iPhones in India, catering to both the domestic and global markets.
Rajeev Chandrasekhar, the Union Minister of State for Electronics & Technology, shared this exciting development on the social networking platform X on October 27.
This landmark decision positions Tata as the first Indian company to manufacture iPhones domestically, following the acquisition of a Wistron Corporation plant in the southern part of the country.
In a recent board meeting, Wistron, the Taiwanese electronics manufacturer, approved the sale of Wistron InfoComm Manufacturing (India) Private Ltd. to Tata for approximately $125 million.
Chandrasekhar expressed his excitement on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “In just two and a half years, Tata Companies will commence the production of iPhones in India for both domestic and global markets. Congratulations to the Tata team for taking over Wistron operations.”

As of now, the Tata group is involved in the production of iPhone chassis, which serves as the metallic structure of the device, at its manufacturing facility in the state of Tamil Nadu.
According to a recent Bloomberg report, the introduction of locally manufactured iPhones in India is expected to bolster Apple’s efforts to diversify its manufacturing footprint beyond China, solidifying its presence in the South Asian nation.
