A 41 year old UK (United Kingdom) based techie visited Bengaluru for training related purposes. He also wanted to look into marriage prospects during the stay and registered on a matrimonial site. A woman befriended him through a fake profile. They exchanged messages and later shared their numbers with each other. She told him that her father had passed away and that she stays with her mother. She reportedly even borrowed Rs 1500 from him on the pretext of a medical intervention for her. On July 4th she got on a video call with the man. She apparently stripped herself in the call. She recorded the call. Later, she sent the video recording to the man. She began blackmailing him. She told him that she would send the recording to his parents. The techie later transferred Rs 1.14 crore to the woman across 2 bank accounts and 4 mobile phone numbers provided by the woman. Apparently it was only making the transfer that he learnt that he learnt her actual number.
He registered a complaint with the police after persistent threats. They managed to freeze Rs 84 lakh from her account. They are making efforts to trace the women. S Girish, Deputy commissioner of police in the Whitefield CEN station warned people to cut calls when inappropriate conduct is identified.
