Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman says people are increasingly turning to AI chatbots for emotional relief during personal struggles, as the tools offer nonjudgmental and empathetic conversations.
Artificial intelligence chatbots have rapidly moved beyond simple tasks like research, writing assistance, and homework help. Today, a growing number of users are turning to AI not just for productivity, but for emotional support during difficult moments in their personal lives.
Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman has highlighted this emerging trend, stating that AI chatbots are increasingly being used as companions to help people process emotions and manage mental well-being. He spoke about this shift during his appearance on the “Breakdown” podcast.
According to Suleyman, many users rely on AI chatbots during emotionally challenging situations such as breakups, family conflicts, and periods of loneliness. He described these interactions as a way for people to “detoxify ourselves” by offloading emotions in a safe and controlled space.

Suleyman clarified that AI chatbots are not a replacement for professional therapy. However, he noted that their design has unintentionally made them helpful for emotional expression. AI models are built to be nonjudgmental, respectful, and empathetic, using reflective listening and calm communication. These qualities allow users to speak freely without fear of criticism or shame.
He explained that because chatbots do not judge, argue, or dismiss feelings, users often feel more comfortable opening up to them than to friends or family members. Over time, this sense of being heard can help people feel understood, especially when they feel unsupported in their real-life relationships.
While some view this trend as unsettling or futuristic, Suleyman pointed out the positive side of using AI for emotional support. He said such interactions can help people release negative emotions and approach real-world relationships with more kindness and balance.
