  • Meta introduces PG-13 content filters on Instagram for under-18 users
  • Parental consent required to change default safety settings
  • Graphic, sexual, and drug-related content will be restricted

New safety measures restrict explicit content for users under 18, giving parents greater control over children’s Instagram experience.

Meta has introduced a significant update to Instagram aimed at enhancing safety for underage users. The social media giant will now automatically place all users under 18 in a 13+ setting, ensuring that they are shielded from graphic violence, sexual content, and drug-related material. Importantly, these settings cannot be altered without parental consent, giving guardians more oversight over what their children can view.

According to Meta, the update is guided by PG-13 film rating principles, ensuring that content visible to teens remains age-appropriate. The platform will filter out depictions of sexuality, drugs, and risky behavior, creating a safer digital environment for young users.

This move comes amid ongoing criticism of social media platforms for their impact on children’s mental health and exposure to unsafe content. Meta emphasized that these guidelines are part of a broader initiative to address both child safety and mental well-being on its platforms.

Currently, the update has been rolled out in the US, UK, Australia, and Canada, with plans for a global implementation next year. By mandating parental approval for underage Instagram use and limiting exposure to harmful content, Meta aims to provide a more controlled and responsible social media experience for young users.
