BJP MP from Bengaluru South, Tejasvi Surya, has taken legal action against the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) and the Karnataka state government, demanding transparency in the Namma Metro fare hike process. His petition will be heard in the Karnataka High Court on Monday.
The core of Surya’s petition is the unreleased report of the fare hike revision committee, which he alleges has been deliberately withheld from public scrutiny. The committee was formed to study global metro fare structures and had reportedly conducted visits to cities like Delhi, Chennai, Hong Kong, and Singapore. Following this, Namma Metro increased its fares by up to 130%.
Despite repeated efforts, including filing Right to Information (RTI) applications and sending formal requests to the BMRCL Managing Director, the report has not been made public. Surya contends that without access to the committee's findings, the sharp fare hike lacks justification and violates public accountability.
In a statement, Surya said that public transport fare decisions must be based on transparent, data-backed processes. “Citizens have the right to know the rationale behind such steep hikes,” he added.

With this legal move, Surya aims to pressure BMRCL into releasing the report and ensure future policy decisions are made transparently. The High Court’s verdict could have significant implications for fare regulation and public access to information in Bengaluru’s growing metro network.
