Bengaluru South MP and BJP leader Tejasvi Surya has proposed the operation of three airports in Bengaluru to elevate the city’s status as a global hub, comparable to cities like New York, Paris, and London. Speaking during a Public Accounts Committee (PAC) meeting in New Delhi, Surya urged the government to reopen the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) Airport for civil aviation and identify a location for a second international airport.

Highlighting the importance of infrastructure expansion, Surya stated that multiple airports would address Bengaluru’s increasing passenger traffic and align it with international standards. The PAC, composed of select Members of Parliament, oversees the auditing of the Central government’s revenue and expenditure.

The HAL Airport, centrally located in Bengaluru, served civilian flights until the opening of the Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) in Devanahalli in 2008. Recently, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) approved a master plan to rejuvenate the facility to meet rising aviation demands.

Currently, HAL Airport accommodates around 12 small aircraft daily, catering to defense operations, VIPs, and private charters. The airport features a single 3,306-meter runway and parking space for 30 aircraft, operating 24/7.

If implemented, Surya’s vision for three operational airports could transform Bengaluru’s connectivity, enhancing its position as a major international travel hub.
