BJP MP Tejasvi Surya recently shared highlights from an impromptu “two-hour masterclass” he experienced during a flight from Mumbai to Bengaluru, seated next to Infosys co-founder NR Narayana Murthy. Calling Murthy “one of the architects of India’s modern tech economy,” Surya added, “I quipped that I’ll strive to meet his 70-hour-a-week target.” Murthy had previously sparked a national debate in 2023 by suggesting that young Indians should commit to working 70 hours a week to accelerate India's development.

According to Surya, Murthy responded with humour, saying, “The only person I know who probably works 100 hours a week is Prime Minister Modi!”

Surya’s post quickly went viral, reigniting debate around Murthy’s work-hour philosophy. While some praised the opportunity for a young MP to learn from a visionary, others argued against glorifying excessive work hours, saying innovation and success require balance, not burnout.
