Temples in Belur and Halebidu listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site

    The announcement came during the 45th session of the World Heritage Committee at Riyadh

The Hoysala temples at Belur, Halebidu and Somanathapur in Karnataka were deemed as a  United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage Sites on September 18th. This was during the 45th session of the World Heritage Committee at Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The Chennakeshava temple of Belu and the Hoysaleshwara temple of Halebidu have been in the consideration to be added to the list ever since 2014. 

“Just inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List: Sacred Ensembles of the Hoysalas, India. Congratulations!” UNESCO posted on X. 

 The Keshava temple at Somanathapur in Mysuru district was added to the list of contenders in February 2022.All three were sent as India’s official nominations for the year 2022-2023. 

The construction of the Chennakeshava temple at Belur was commissioned by king Vishnuvardhana in 1117 CE. The construction of the Hoysaleshwara temple commenced 4 years later. They took more than a 100 years to be built. The Keshava temple however was constructed under the rule of Narasimha 3 from 1268 CE onwards. 

 “More pride for India! The magnificent Sacred Ensembles of the Hoysalas have been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The timeless beauty and intricate details of the Hoysala temples are a testament to India’s rich cultural heritage and the exceptional craftsmanship of our ancestors,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote on X.
