Tesla is finally making its long-anticipated entry into India, with the electric vehicle giant set to open its first showroom in Mumbai's upscale Bandra Kurla Complex on July 15. Marking its official debut in the Indian automotive market, the showroom will serve as a premium experience centre where visitors can explore Tesla models, compare variants, check pricing, and begin customising orders.

Initially, the centre will host VIP guests and business partners, with public access expected to begin the following week. Deliveries of Tesla’s flagship Model Y SUV are projected to start in India by the end of August. The company has already imported a limited number of these vehicles into the country, along with chargers and accessories, indicating a focus on showcasing and selling existing models rather than assembling them locally for now.
Despite previous discussions about setting up a manufacturing facility in India, Tesla’s initial strategy appears to focus on imports. However, high import duties, particularly the 70% tax on completely built units priced under $40,000 are likely to push prices far above the US retail cost, testing the brand’s appeal among Indian buyers.
Tesla’s move comes as the company looks to tap into new and emerging markets amid global headwinds and underused production capacity. India, with its fast-growing interest in electric vehicles and supportive government policies, presents a promising opportunity.
The company has been actively recruiting in India, hiring for sales, service, and supply chain roles, hinting at a larger expansion blueprint that may include more advanced offerings like Autopilot technology in the future.
