In the leaked phone call, Paetongtarn called Hun Sen, the former Prime Minister of Cambodia and an important political figure “uncle” and said she would “take care” of some matters, including a border problem between Thailand and Cambodia. The call happened after a deadly fight at the border in May. She also allegedly spoke negatively about a top Thai Army officer. This caused concern because people felt she was being too friendly with a foreign leader and not respectful enough toward the Thai military. Many believe her words could affect Thailand’s safety and relationship with other countries.
The leaked call has also led to strong public anger. In Bangkok, many people protested and called Paetongtarn a “traitor” and a “sell-out.” They also held signs asking her to step down as Prime Minister. One of the main political parties supporting her, the Bhum Jai Thai Party, left the ruling group. Another party, the United Thai Nation, is also facing pressure to leave her side as well.
In response to the criticism, Paetongtarn said she did not mean to insult the Thai military. She explained that her aim was to reduce tension with Cambodia and avoid further problems after the border clash. She has also apologized to the public for her words.
At the moment, Paetongtarn has been suspended and cannot continue working as Prime Minister.
