Pet activists cry government apathy towards saving dogs in Bengaluru. There is only very little support from the government on dogs and their well-being.
As we observe International Dog Day on August 26, many NGOs come out to initiate measures to protect and save dogs while they complain on the rise in the number of dog trauma cases in the city.
Instances of dog adoptions in Bengaluru have also gone down significantly owing to a number of reasons.
Many dogs are left abandoned by its breeders and while in some other cases, dogs are intentionally poisoned to death. The dogs in the city are only seeing the fate of miseries with people causing harm to these dogs.
Activists demand the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to open 24x7 government hospitals to treat the trauma of dogs and their care in the city.
Government has to put in place a facility to do post-mortem on dogs to identify incidents of dog poisoning by people. Some experts on dog care say that they would need cold storage facilities and an emergency response team to attend to cases of dog poisoning and trace the miscreants who poison the dogs to death.
They also demand to create a toll-free number where incidents related to dogs can be reported and attended to. They also ask the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) to appoint specific people at police stations to attend to animal trauma cases.
Shortage of funds and lack of enough shelter facilities for dogs and its care at various NGOs working for dogs are only adding to the miseries of dogs. Adding to this is another issue where the existing shelter homes for dogs in the city are already overburdened with dogs.
