Authorities reported that at least four vehicles plunged into the river following the collapse. Rescue teams were able to save four individuals from the water, and operations are ongoing to locate any remaining victims. The collapse caused a major traffic disruption, affecting a crucial transportation link between the two cities.
The bridge, constructed in 1985, had reportedly undergone maintenance over the years. Officials confirmed that a detailed investigation will be carried out to determine the cause of the structural failure. Initial visuals from the site showed the complete collapse of a bridge slab section between two supporting piers.
The incident highlights growing concerns about the condition of aging infrastructure in the region. Emergency services, including police and disaster response teams, remain on-site to manage the situation and assist with recovery efforts.
As investigations continue, authorities are expected to assess the structural integrity of similar bridges in the area to prevent further accidents. The tragedy has prompted renewed scrutiny of bridge safety and maintenance protocols across the state.
