Toyota is setting up its first research and development (R&D) centre in India, highlighting the country's growing importance in the company’s global strategy. The facility, located in Bengaluru near Toyota Kirloskar Motor’s plant in Bidadi, will commence operations with 200 engineers and expand to 1,000 by 2027.

This move aligns with Toyota’s recent decision to position India as a key hub for its operations across the Middle East, East Asia, and Oceania. The company is also increasing investments in clean technology, reinforcing its partnership with Suzuki Motor Corp. in electric vehicle (EV) development.
Currently, Toyota’s India lineup primarily consists of gasoline and hybrid models. However, the company is leveraging Suzuki’s expertise, particularly studying the latter’s Rohtak R&D centre, one of India’s largest automotive engineering hubs. Toyota’s upcoming Urban Cruiser EV, a rebadged version of Suzuki’s e-Vitara, will be manufactured at Suzuki Motor Gujarat from 2025, marking a significant step in their joint EV push.
The Bengaluru R&D centre will be Toyota’s third in the Asia-Pacific region outside Japan, following investments in China and Thailand. While initially focused on India, it may evolve into a global R&D hub.
As Toyota faces challenges in China from emerging local manufacturers, India presents an opportunity for growth, positioning the company to strengthen its presence in both domestic and international EV markets.
