The truck, carrying fruit vendors and produce, was traveling from Savanur to a fair in Yellapura when it overturned in a forested section of the Savanur-Hubballi road. The driver lost control while avoiding an overtaking vehicle, causing the truck to fall into a 50-meter-deep valley.
Over 30 passengers, all vendors heading to sell fruits at the fair, were aboard the truck at the time of the accident. Emergency services transported the injured to KIMS Hospital in Hubballi for treatment.
This incident follows a similar tragedy last month near Bengaluru, where six people died after a container truck overturned and crushed a car.
Local authorities have extended condolences to the victims' families and emphasized the need for enhanced road safety measures, particularly in high-risk areas like the accident site.
