On Tuesday, US President Donald Trump voiced his perspective on the ongoing debate surrounding H-1B visas, emphasizing the need for skilled immigration while balancing differing views on the program. Speaking at a White House press conference with Oracle CTO Larry Ellison, SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son, and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Trump acknowledged, “I like both sides of the argument but also support bringing very competent people into our country.”

The H-1B visa program, primarily used to bring skilled foreign workers, has sparked controversy. Supporters, including Tesla CEO Elon Musk, argue it bolsters innovation and growth, while critics claim it displaces American workers. Highlighting his understanding of the program, Trump stated, “We need high-quality people to expand businesses, and the H-1B program helps achieve that.”
Trump’s remarks follow his administration’s actions to tackle illegal immigration. On Monday, shortly after taking office, he signed executive orders declaring a national emergency at the southern border and targeting drug cartels. He also signaled plans to end birthright citizenship.
While expressing his approval of legal immigration, Trump stressed the need for reform. “I’m fine with legal immigration; we need people,” he remarked. Indian nationals currently dominate H-1B visa holders, accounting for 72% of the program’s participants, which grants temporary work authorization for up to six years.
